Position Overview:

Responsible for Managing the Day to Day Laboratory Operations of a clinical Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Laboratory and running a Highly Efficient and Safe Laboratory. Supervise NGS platforms in the Laboratory, to ensure and maintain high Quality and timely Laboratory Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with overseeing Laboratory staff and all technical operations of the laboratory to ensure efficient and uninterrupted lab operations.
  • Ensure accountability, safety, integrity and validity of lab results.
  • Oversee and manage day to day lab operations and related issues.
  • Ensure the lab and its technical staff provide the highest quality of care keeping in compliance with CAP, CLIA, and federal, state and local requirements.
  • Participate is strategic planning of lab services.
  • Oversee and develop laboratory practice standards and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with staff on projects from inception through Laboratory Investigation to Clinical Interpretation.
  • Establish and maintain a collaborative working relationship with all members to identify and resolve problems/issues.
  • Plans, designs and implements installation of new or improved laboratory techniques.
  • Reviews quality control data, recognizes and resolves problems as well as prepares or directs preparation of various qualitative and quantitative reports and records.
  • Effectively investigate any issues or errors and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Develop, implement and monitor laboratory policies and procedures throughout the laboratory.
  • Oversee the laboratory’s training programs to include competency assessment program, safety program, hazardous waste management, chemical hygiene plan, and injury prevention program.
  • Develop and run financial and operational reports to track and ensure adherence to budgetary, productivity and benchmarking standards.
  • Develop and implement plans for growth, additional lab services and/or reorganization of Laboratory operations, budgets and asset allocations to enhance productivity, cost-effectiveness, and quality.
  • Accessible and responsive to the laboratory staff and management for Consultations and resolving operational issues in a timely manner.
  • Emphasize team accountability to company standards of patient deliverables, financial performance, customer service, and use of company services.
  • Establish positive relationships with stakeholders and other vendors at the Senior Management level.
  • Promote a positive work environment, strong employee morale, and maintain low employee turn over
  • Perform other lab related duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualification Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Experience with most or all of the following technologies is preferred:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience with Next-generation sequencing library preparation and instrument runs is required.
  • Experience with DNA extraction, molecular biology techniques including qPCR, PCR, capillary electrophoresis preferred.
  • Operation of liquid handling systems.
  • Experience with inventory management and general laboratory management and oversight including (direct reports) preferred
  • Capillary electrophoresis: Sanger sequencing and fragment analysis.
  • Integrated laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
  • Attention to detail
  • Computer skills: Google Suite, Microsoft Office, etc.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • PhD in biological sciences or a related field with more than 1 year of NGS experience is preferred OR Masters/Bachelors with 2 or more years of experience in NGS and molecular biology techniques required.
  • Experience working in a CAP/CLIA Laboratory environment preferred but not required.
  • Experience with the operation of automation/liquid handling system is preferred.
  • Experience with integrated laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is preferred.
  • Experience in genomic workflows (e.g., exomes, genomes, NGS instrumentation) is a plus.
Must have ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience operating PCR instrumentation, including maintenance, troubleshooting, and data review

Work Environment: May work in a variety of laboratory environments at Biosafety Levels I or II. Working at a desk in an office or lab setting.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Travel: Work related travel will be minimal.
