What is Pharmacogenomics?
According to the CDC, Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is an important type of Precision Medicine. Precision medicine tailors treatments to a specific patient based on genetic makeup, environment and behaviors.
PGx provides personalized medication management guidance to healthcare providers based on how an individual patient’s body responds to certain medications.
How does Pharmacogenomics work?
After taking a medication, the body needs to process, utilize and respond to it. Genetic makeup can impact the body’s ability to do this. Pharmacogenomics examines variations in a patient’s genes which can predict how his/her body will likely react to a medication. The information assists health care providers in selecting the most effective medication for that specific patient.
There are two important factors that can be genetically examined to determine how a patient may react to a medication:
Proteins on the surface of a cell are called “receptors.” The study of how DNA impacts these receptors is called “Pharmacodynamics.” Drugs attach themselves to the cells via these receptors. The number and type of receptors of a cell can be influenced by an individual’s DNA.
Pharmacokinetics examines the body’s ability to absorb, distribute, metaboilze and excrete a medication over a length of time.
For example, some medications must be absorbed into specific cells and tissue in order to properly process them. This is known as “drug uptake.” The breadown of a medication is called “elimination.” A decreased ability to breakdown a drug efficiently can result in a build up of the drug, causing adverse effects and bad reactions. An increase can result in the drug being processed before it has time to take effect. A patient’s DNA can impact how quickly or slowly some drugs are broken down in the body.
