With the advent of technology, like Next-Generation sequencing, scientists and healthcare providers have the capability to collect large amounts of data about the human genome. The question put forth - What do you do with all of the data?
Matt Beckman, a Senior Scientist at GENETWORx, was invited to address this topic in his Keynote Talk, "Big Data Challenges and Opportunities" that was presented at the Advancing Computational Biology Symposium at Howard University on March 26th. During his presentation, Dr. Beckman focused on the evolution of the methods being used to bridge the vast promise of the Human Genome Sequencing Project to the era of personalized medicine. This included the analysis of sequence variation and population based allele frequencies.
About Dr. Matthew J. Beckman - Senior Scientist
Dr. Beckman was previously a member of the faculty of the Department of Molecular Biochemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he led a research team in the area of bone biology and regeneration, and directed the molecular division of the VCU Orthopedic Research Laboratory. Dr. Beckman has published over 40 articles, manuscripts and reviews and is currently a leading expert in the area of Personalized Medicine for next-generation DNA sequencing and heredity genomics, with a focus on targeted therapeutics in pain, cardiac, and medication management. Dr. Beckman also serves as acting Laboratory Supervisor in the CLIA and CAP accredited clinical lab at GENETWORx that supports state of the art gene testing technology. Dr. Beckman holds a Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Steubenville in Ohio. He received his PhD degree in Nutritional Physiology with an emphasis in molecular, cellular and developmental biology from Iowa State University. His postdoctoral training was in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he studied the molecular mechanism of action of Vitamin D and metabolism of Vitamin D via P450 enzyme systems.
